Universtiy of Miami Miller School of Medicine Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs

Biomedical Graduate Student Government

Hello! I’d like to take this opportunity to reintroduce the Biomedical Graduate Student Government (BGSG). From our inception four years ago, the student led BGSG has endeavored to serve the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine graduate student body in addressing their academic, professional and social needs through programs, mentorship and communication with university administration.

You may be familiar with some of our keynote events, such as the yearly distinguished guest lecturer in the spring which recently hosted Drs. Miguel Nicolelis and Marc Kirschner or our industry speaker event with Dr. Nancy Stagliano. These events provide additional opportunities for students to interact directly with speakers in small group meetings. You may be less familiar with our lower profile activities that are equally important in fulfilling our mission. These have included the Teaching and Learning workshop (a multi-day professor led event meant to supplement those graduate programs lacking teaching components), publication of The BGSG’s Unofficial PIBS Guide, (an exhaustive introduction to the university, the graduate programs and the city of Miami), monthly Coffee and Donuts discussion sessions (informal discussions on rotating topics focused on science and graduate student life), the Mock Qualifying Exam (QE) program (designed to help students practice the written and oral portion of their QE with senior students to get feedback and improve their performance), community service activities (such as cleaning green spaces, beaches, and cooking dinner and spending time with the families at the Ronald McDonald House) and many more.

With each passing year the BGSG gets better at what it does and more focused on its mission – this year will be no exception. While continuing and improving upon those initiatives that have added the greatest value to the graduate student experience the BGSG has a number of new initiatives in store that we hope will further enhance graduate student life and opportunity here at UM.
