To the University of Miami Community:
I am pleased to share that the Postdoctoral Programs Office (PPO) will report to Graduate School Dean Guillermo “Willy” Prado beginning September 1, 2018.
The University of Miami is home to a vibrant research community, and there are now more than 275 postdoctoral fellows working on all three campuses. The growth of postdoctoral programs across the University’s schools and colleges and the emergence of new interdisciplinary opportunities prompted the decision to move the program to a University-wide office. By having the PPO report to the Graduate School, we will improve our ability to provide coordinated professional development to our trainees and leverage existing professional development programs already created for our graduate students.
Wasif N. Khan, Ph.D., a professor of microbiology and immunology who joined the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine faculty in 2008, served as director of the Postdoctoral Programs Office for the past seven years and will continue his vital research and teaching at the Miller School. His dedicated efforts helped to elevate the program’s stature with researchers and granting organizations worldwide, and we are grateful for his service.
I also would like to acknowledge the executive board of the Postdoc Association for their invaluable input in helping to advance the mission of the PPO.
Building on an already strong foundation, the PPO plans to expand programming, including the creation of a teaching academy and research symposium.
I want to thank Dean Prado for working closely with graduate students and faculty on all campuses. His administrative skills and dedicated team will ensure a streamlined experience for postdoc fellows and their faculty mentors as the University moves forward on its new strategic goals.
Jeffrey L. Duerk, Ph.D.
Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
