Throughout my career I have been an officer of national,
regional and international organizations, as for example, the UK Biochemical
Society, the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), which I
helped found, and the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
(IUBMB), as General Secret and President. While occupying these offices I help create a number of
journals, including the European Journal of Biochemistry ( now the FEBS
Journal), FEBS Letters, Trends in Biochemical Sciences ( TiBS),Biotechnology
and Applied Biochemistry, BioEssays, BioFactors , the FASEB Journal and IUBMB
Life. I have been the Editor-in-Chief of several of these.
Our basic principle is that of scientists publishing for
scientists, and while we are happy to work with commercial publishers and make
use of their business expertise, we insist on owning the copyright and
receiving royalties, which over the past 4 decades have brought FEBS, IUBMB and
FASEB tens of millions of dollars which are plowed back into science.
Fir my researches and
organizing activities I was awarded the CIBA Medal of the UK Biochemical
Society, membership of the Royal College
of Physicians, the FEBS Millennium Medal and the Fellowship of the Royal
Society.
