Overview
The Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Miami School of Medicine is committed to research and education.  The department consists of 18 faculty members, 29 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and 11 staff members, who conduct research to understand and characterize the mechanisms underlying physiological phenomena, mainly at the cellular and molecular level. Major research areas include: ion channels and transporters, sensory mechanisms, signal transduction, neuroimmunology, and muscle physiology. State-of-the-art equipment and facilities, together with collaborations with other research units on the campus, such as the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and the Diabetes Institute, create a unique research environment to study physiological functions under physiological and pathological conditions and to discover the underlying causes of human diseases.
