Two studies, led by Grace Zhai, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular and cellular pharmacology, and pharmacology graduate student Yousuf Ali, Ph.D., published back-to-back in the January 15 issue of Human Molecular Genetics discovered the protective effects of NMNAT in delaying neurodegeneration in Drosophila and mouse models of tauopathy, a form of Alzheimer’s disease. The studies showed that overexpression of NMNAT significantly suppresses both behavioral and morphological deficits associated with tauopathy by means of reducing the levels of toxic hyperphosphorylated tau oligomers. These findings could be the basis for a potential neuroprotective therapy. The study in Drosophila models was so noteworthy that it was selected as the cover story of the issue.  To read more...
